Committee for 2008-2009

Congratulations to the newly elected committee members! At this year's AGM we had a large shift of people coming in and others moving out of the committee. The new committee is as follows: President - Mikey Vice-President - Fish Secretary - Bec Treasurer - Sop Marketing Officer - Billy 1st Year Representative - Tallon We hope you like you're new committee. Well you should, you voted for them! Also mega-big thanks to this past year's committee members who did a tremendous job, as well as Scotty and Tony who played a big part in making sure we didn't run around like headless chickens. Enjoy yourselves and see you all for the BBQ on Thursday (6pm, outside the Monash Sport Kiosk)! --- Fish is our friend... not our food!

Committee Positions

Edit: The position of "Performance Officer" has been replaced with "First Year Representative" this year. For those of you panicking about the inevitable shifting of the universe that comes with every Monash Wushu Club Annual General Meeting, here is a review of the positions available. The AGM is on the 25th of August 2008 (Monday). We will also fit in some training that day (hooray). President: The President guides the vision and direction of the club. They make the most of the committee to pursue our best interests and development. This includes ensuring finances, morale, sustainability, competitiveness etc. are at a high standard. They must understand the workings of the club, and use their knowledge to ensure things get done. Further, they should have a keen interest in wushu (you should all have a keen interest in wushu!) Vice-President: The Vice-President is the primary contact between Monash Wushu and the rest of Monash University, particularly Monash Sport. This includes responsibility for booking performance times and stall space during O-week, handling changes to training (e.g. if we are moved from the Games Hall) etc. As the name suggests, the VP also assists the President with "getting stuff done". Treasurer: Responsible for all the club’s finances. This job has straighforward tasks that can be learnt and followed easily but require the responsibility to carry out well and correctly each time. (Importantly, this crosses over easily into career skills and personal finance skills you may need in the future). The treasurer records and interacts with Monash Sport, our bank, performance clients and receives membership fees. Marketing Officer: We couldn’t perform if no one knew who we were! The marketing officer keeps tabs of who we regularly perform for (e.g. Chinese New Year in the city) and approaches people we might perform for (e.g. schools, other unis, council festivals, etc.). Our performance pack, which contains information and a demonstration CD of our club, is available for distribution to potential clients. The marketing officer also keeps our fliers up to date for events like O-week and large performances for handing out to interested members of the public. First Year Representative: Newbies who would like to get in on all the behind the scenes action apply here! The committee thinks and works together and the first year rep. is no exception :D If there are issues or ideas for beginners training or how other beginners are getting along the FYR is your (wo)man on the inside. Secretary: No easy task! The secretary must be unbelievably attractive and intellectually outstanding. How else would they be able to handle the heavy load of writing down the important points of committee meetings? Or keep a current database of MWC members? Or get uniforms for members through Master Tang? The secretary is also simultaneously awarded “Most Amazing Person” upon becoming secretary. The committee works together (like a family! who look nothing alike) toward the success of the Monash Wushu Club. We share a lot of tasks and come up with lots of ideas, making the whole process fun and interesting rather than intimidating. Don’t be afraid to nominate yourself or others! <33 Soapcretary

The position of Treasurer

Hey all. For anyone thinking of taking up a committee place (more specifically treasurer) but think you need an accounting background...think again! Of course it would help, but because the club's operations are so simple it's pretty straight forward. Anyway I have detailed instructions on exactly what the treasurer has to do....and i'll be there to assist when I can THINK ABOUT IT Seriously looks good on the CV.....Yeah, you heard me... -Hen......(ry)

Premiere a success!

Hey guys! Once again, I would like to thank everyone who came to the premiere Friday night. It really meant a lot to myself and the cast to see so many people interested in this fun project we put so much time and effort into. I was literally in tears at the sound of cheering at the end credits, so thank you guys so much for all the support. DVDs will be available soon, but unfortunately we will need to charge a small fee per DVD (to cover the cost of DVDs and cases). I will be taking orders next training session. Again, thank you to everyone! I hope you had as much fun watching the movie as we did making it! (apart from Scott's little car bonnet accident) Cheers! -Jimmy

Kicking butt and taking names

That's right! All of the above and more to be enjoyed at the slightly inaugural Wushu movie and pizza night to be held after the exams! In case the idea of bi-weekly weapons, 5-stance and fit young men/women running about doesn't motivate you to power through your study (Fish uses the suspicious "heads down bums up" method, see below) then surely climactic wushu fantasy movies and food with zero nutritional value will give you something to look forward to over the bleak sea of examinations that awaits! Date: Last exams are 23rd (Monday) and 25th (Wednesday) June, and a third option is the 27th (Friday) around 5-6pm. Vote for your favourite! Big brother is watching. Location: Clayton South (address to be revealed later, so that people don't start lining up outside their house in anticipation) BYO: We'll look after a whole bunch of pizza (please RSVP to this thread so we can cater!), but to truly make this a junk food spectacular it'd be great if people could bring snacks/soft drinks/traditional antipasto etc. Please use this thread to let us know what you'll bring so we don't end up with a 20-bag mountain of nachos flavoured doritos (AWESOME). Also, taking requests for any blockbuster/obscure martial arts movies people would like to see. Yours study-ly-ly, Soapcretary. (Jet Li um...invites you?)

Exam Stress??? COME TO WUSHU!

Hi all you worriers! About this time of year we all head into exam mode, head down bum up, and cram our little brains full of junk we will never need again... Yay for us! What is great about Wushu is that as well as being a great reliever of stress, it's also a very useful motivational tool! "I'm going to finish this study so I can go to Wushu tonight, YEAH! KICK ASS!" So basically what I'm saying is if you're serious about your exams, you should seriously think about coming to Wushu during the exam period for a breather and also to recharge your batteries. Good luck for all your respective exams everyone! Fish

Hey peeps, Good news and bad news. The bad news is first, we are cancelling the Xmas party during the day on Saturday. I repeat - Saturday BBQ is CANCELLED. The good news is we can still party like it's 1999 on Saturday night. Many Wushu people as well as other friends will be clubbing our hearts out at Ondergronds, corner of Russell and Flinders, from 9.30 til late. It'll be about $20 entry but it will be well worth it. The night is in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation, and it will be a great party night to remember 2007. So come along and we'll treat it like our Wushu Xmas Party. Any questions about the night, just call me. 0411 391 347 Fish is our friend... not our food!

Permanent Relocation - Venue Change from December 1

Some not so good news has come to light in the recent month or so. After over a decade of training in the cushy, carpeted Aerobics Hall, we now have to change venue. Due to the expansion of Monash Sport's Aerobics program, we are being permanently relocated to the Games Hall as of Dec 1. The Games Hall is the big basketball court just up the hall from the aerobics hall on the left. We are also changing our training times on Thursdays from 8-10pm back to the original time of 7:30-9:30pm. Mondays remain at 8:30-10:30pm. The last training session in the current venue, the aerobics hall, will be next Thursday the 29th of Nov. Any questions, come and ask one of the committee members, See you at training Fish
